Apple: three stores unionized soon?

San Francisco, Nov. 18, 2022

A group of Apple Store employees in St. Louis, Missouri, is the latest to file for a union election.

The move comes after Apple retail workers in Maryland and Oklahoma successfully voted to unionize, forcing Apple to negotiate with them over wages and working conditions.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) hopes to represent the workers. On Wednesday, the IAM filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to hold the unionization vote, saying it wants to represent 82 Apple workers in St. Louis.

The group also filed a lawsuit against Apple for allegedly requiring St. Louis employees to attend mandatory anti-union meetings and threatening them with penalties. Unions have made similar allegations about Apple’s conduct in Oklahoma, Maryland and Atlanta.

In response, Apple said it has raised wages and offered more benefits to employees in recent years.

The IAM also organized to unionize Apple Store employees in Towson, Maryland. If successful, St. Louis would be the third Apple Store in the U.S. to unionize. Apple has 272 stores in the U.S.
