Microsoft in the frenzy of AI

San Francisco, 1/24/2023

Microsoft confirmed it is making another multi-billion dollar investment in ChatGPT and DAII-E creator OpenAI. While the software giant didn’t reveal the exact amount, a source told The New York Times that it’s around $10 billion.

With the agreement confirmed today, Microsoft will increase its total investment in OpenAI by $3 billion in 2019 and 2021. The two companies have renewed their partnership, under which they will continue to collaborate on AI technologies and products.

Since 2019, Microsoft has been the exclusive cloud partner for OpenAI, and its Azure-based supercomputing system has been used to train all of OpenAI’s machine learning and AI models.

Microsoft will continue to invest in supercomputing systems and drive new AI experiences and products. It said Azure will remain OpenAI’s cloud provider for its workloads across its API, research, and products.

Microsoft recently announced the wide availability of its Azure OpenAI service, which allows cloud customers to access OpenAI tools such as GPT-3.5, Codex, DALL-E 2 and soon ChatGPT.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella plans to build AI capabilities into „every product“.

It’s all about integrating ChatGPT’s text generation capabilities into Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and other apps.
