A certain addiction to ChatGPT

New York, 1/25/2023

In a LinkedIn post, Indian billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani praised the capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT tool, calling it „a transformative moment in the democratization of AI.“ The chairman and founder of the Adani Group also admitted that he has had „a certain addiction“ to ChatGPT since a demo of the tool was released by OpenAI in late November.

Adami is convinced that generative AI technologies will have „massive effects“.

Their danger is equal to that of computer chips. Competition and growth are quickly becoming „as complex and involved as the ongoing silicon chip war.“ “

Adani wrote that Chinese scientists have now published more cited ki-oriented papers than their American counterparts. A recent Nikkei study shows that China-based organizations will produce around 43,000 AI-related works in 2021, about twice as many as in the US. (See the following text)

China beats the US in AI research performance and quality?

China is the champion in artificial intelligence research, according to a recent Nikkei study. However, as the data obtained show, this is not so clear.

Nikkei partnered with Dutch academic publisher Elsevier to review academic and conference papers on AI, using around 800 AI-associated keywords to narrow the papers.

Looking at the crowd, the number of AI papers exploded from about 25,000 in 2012 to about 135,000 in 2021. This reflects the AI boom that started around 2012 when deep learning came to the fore, according to the study .

Among other things, the study evaluated the quality of the research. This included counting the number of articles that belonged to the top 10%. Result: In 2012, the USA led with 629 of these most frequently cited articles, followed by China with 425. China later made dramatic strides, eventually overtaking the US in 2019. In 2021, China accounted for 7,401 of the most cited articles. According to the study, „the American balance sheet was exceeded by about 70%“.

China is ready to continue this momentum. Under a government plan released in 2017, it aims to develop next-generation AI and become the world’s top AI innovation hub by 2030. The powerhouses include the pro-government Chinese Academy of Sciences, the country’s leading academic institution. It has enormous research capacities. Tsinghua University, a public research university in Beijing, is also an AI hotspot.

According to the study, Tencent Holdings, Alibaba Group Holding and Huawei Technologies are among the top 10 companies conducting AI research. The Chinese contingent is steadily gaining ground. However, the dominance of American technology giants such as Google’s parent company Alphabet, Microsoft and IBM – these were the top three manufacturers during the 10-year period examined. In 2021, six US companies were among the top 10 most cited research.

However, Chinese companies are gaining traction on this front. In terms of research output, only one Chinese company made the top 10 in 2012. As recently as 2016, American players retained a major advantage in the top-cited research. But in 2021, Tencent, Alibaba, Huawei and State Grid Corp. from China four of the top 10 in terms of volume and citations. As a state power distributor, State Grid also has one of the best AI research branches among Chinese companies. This is made possible by the collected big data from hundreds of millions of smart meters. State Grid develops technologies for forecasting electricity demand and detecting problems in the electricity grid. Baidu, which offers China’s leading search engine, ranked 11th in both the quantity and quality of AI research.
