Google wants to delete two-year-old inactive accounts

San Francisco, 9.8. 2023

Google is moving forward with a plan to delete accounts that have been inactive for two years or more. Google says it will start deleting unused accounts in Gmail, YouTube and other services in December.

The goal is to increase security, as older accounts are more vulnerable to security risks like phishing and hacking. Certain exceptions apply, e.g. B. YouTube channel accounts, gift card balances, digital purchases, and active published apps.

The company plans to send multiple alerts to users and phase the account clean-ups. Accounts that have been created but never used are prioritized.

The policy only applies to personal accounts and not to companies or schools.

To keep the account active, users must log in at least every two years or use a Google service.
