Climate Change AI awards research grants

San Francisco, 6/9/2021

Climate Change AI is awarding $1.8 million in research grants for AI/ML projects that address climate change. The group is awarding innovation grants of up to $150,000 per project. Applications are due by Oct. 15.

The funds come from Quadrature’s Climate Foundation investment fund and Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and his wife Wendy Schmidt.

Projects must use AI or ML and public datasets to „mitigate climate change, adapt to climate change, or conduct climate science.“

Researchers are already using AI to analyze satellite imagery to better detect methane leaks that contribute to climate change.

This comes two years after Climate Change AI published a research paper, „Tackling Climate Change with Machine Learning,“ describing how AI could combat climate change.

The paper, which is among the most cited on arXiv, says AI could improve weather forecasting and help optimize electricity supply and demand, among other things.
