Good idea: rating current hardware by repairability

New York, 11/3/2022

According to a report by the U.S. Public Research Interest Group’s Education Fund (U.S. PIRG), cell phones and laptops from Apple, Microsoft and Google were rated significantly lower for repairability than those offered by Asus, Dell and Motorola.

Both Microsoft and Apple landed in the „D“ category for laptop repairs. Apple received an „F“ for cell phone repairability and Google received a „D“ . To determine the ratings, US PIRG considered the companies‘ repair scores from France, as well as their experience with right-to-repair legislation. Under France’s „repair index“ law, electronics manufacturers are required to rate their products on their repairability.

The rating and related data are made publicly available to customers. The PIRG report also penalized companies for any lobbying against so-called „right-to-repair“ legislation.
