Google’s Ki language model MUM strong on crisis issues

San Francisco,4/4/2022

Google announces it will update its AI language model „Multitask Unified Model,“ or MUM, to improve search results for crisis topics such as suicide. The company will apply the model to both Google and YouTube searches to better identify when someone is in a critical situation.

The AI model can help identify when support resources related to domestic violence, sexual assault, suicide and substance abuse should be displayed. According to Google, MUM can also understand more complex and lengthy search queries, such as „Why did he attack me when I told him I didn’t love him anymore.“

The company commented that it wants to make search safer with the AI model. Because MUM can translate into 75 languages, Google plans to work with local partners.

The model is capable of simultaneously acquiring knowledge, answering complex questions, generating speech and interpreting text, images and video.

At last year’s I/O, Google used MUM in a search query for „I’ve hiked Mt. Adams and now want to hike Mt. Fuji next fall, what should I do differently to prepare?“ MUM was able to point out the similarities and differences between the mountains and present articles for hiking gear.
