Tesla announces self-driving robot cabs for 2024

San Francisco,4/22/2022

According to Elon Musk, Tesla plans to reach mass production of a self-driving robotaxi in 2024. The CEO shared details about the car, which would have no steering wheel or pedals, during Wednesday’s first-quarter conference call.

Musk first announced a „special“ self-driving cab, which he said would look „futuristic,“ during the Cyber Rodeo opening event of his Giga Texas factory earlier this month.

On Wednesday, Musk provided more details. He said the car will be „highly optimized“ for autonomous driving and feature other innovations. It will be designed to achieve the lowest cost per mile.

Based on current projections, Musk explained that „a ride will be cheaper than a bus ticket, a discounted bus ticket or a subsidized subway ticket. Tesla could unveil the vehicle in 2023 and is aiming for volume production in 2024.

Competitors in the autonomous robot cab space include Alphabet’s Waymo, GM subsidiary Cruise, Argo AI, Aurora, Motional and Zoox.
