New York, Oct. 29, 2022
Lego has announced it is phasing out its Mindstorms kits for building semi-autonomous robots. The kits were first developed in 1998 as a collaboration between Lego and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Lego says it will stop production by the end of this year.
The kits contain Technics bricks for building robots that can be controlled by a programmable processing unit and sensors. Many enthusiasts have been known to add AI components to the robots, such as computer vision
New generations have been added to the kits over the years. The latest, Robot Inventor, combines the building system with robotics and coding elements.
Lego says it will maintain support for the mobile app for two or more years after the kits are discontinued. It will move its Mindstorms team to “other areas of the company.”
