Data analysis and database vendors continue to develop new versions of their platforms that include cloud native features and more detailed views of structured and unstructured data. The latter is intended to help cope with the rapidly increasing volume of data.
Datanami reports that two events last week attracted the attention of industry insiders: Tableau Software released advanced data and server management capabilities, while the Yugabyte database startup updated its distributed SQL platform to enable users to scale data applications.
Based on the relational database service Google Cloud Spanner, Yugabyte DB is an open source and cloud native distributed SQL database. Version 2.0, released on September 17, brings the startup’s relational distributed SQL API into production.
„Distributed SQL addresses both start-ups and large enterprises that want to deploy cloud-based technologies across their entire software stack, including their database infrastructure,“ said Kannan Muthukkaruppan, founder and CEO of Yugabyte, in a blog post.
In addition to attributes such as data resilience and geographic distribution, the updated database also retains PostgreSQL compatibility. These compatibility features include simple and complex PostgreSQL data types, distributed transactions and indexing. Several PostgreSQL extensions have also been tested with Yugabyte DB 2.0.
The startup also brought a tenfold increase in database scaling compared to Amazon Web Service (NASDAQ: AMZN)’s relational database Aurora, according to the latest SQL benchmarks on AWS.
Meanwhile, the Seattle-based Tableau announced a number of new features this week in the form of a „catalog“ to improve visibility and data discovery. On September 8, a server management „add-on“ was announced to support the management of enterprise Tableau server deployments.
The catalog, which is included as part of a data management add-on, allows users to create data, track how and by whom it is used, and alert those users to data changes or quality issues.
The data management tools, which also include a data preparation manager, are calculated to improve data utilization within an analytics environment by ensuring data freshness and ensuring that „trusted data is always used to make decisions,“ noted the Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) analytics unit.
Tableau’s server management add-on is designed to support the delivery of large-scale data analytics by streamlining the management of mission-critical application deployments. Features include a resource monitoring feature, a content migration tool, the option to host a server metadata repository externally on Amazon RDS Postgres, and integration with Amazon’s Key Management Service.
