Deepfakes are a serious problem this year. Amazon announced today that it is joining the DeepFake Detection Challenge (DFDC), run by large corporations such as Facebook and Microsoft, to step up efforts to identify manipulated content.
The company will provide $1 million in AWS credits to researchers over the next two years. AWS is also working with DFDC partners to investigate complex data sets for deepfake detection in the cloud service using the scalable Amazon S3 infrastructure.
Amazon explained that researchers must apply for a grant of at least $1,000 and no more than $10,000. It will also help researchers with experts from the Amazon Machine Learning Solution Lab get started.
In September, Facebook announced the DeepFake Detection Challenge program in collaboration with Microsoft and academic institutions such as Cornell Tech, MIT and the University of Oxford. The initiative partners pledged $10 million and released a record of 5,000 videos to help people develop recognition tools. The DFDC will publish the complete dataset in December.
Last month, Google published a wealth of deepfake videos designed to help researchers develop new ways to sort out counterfeit content. Twitter announced today that it is seeking help from its users to create guidelines for deepfake.
