At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the car companies will not shine with brand new creations. On the one hand, the fair lacks the seal of approval for new products, on the other hand, the automotive industry continues to struggle with technology-related disruptions caused by electrification, autonomous driving and new business models.
In addition to the 10 large corporations, around 160 automotive technology companies will also be appearing. Their aim is to form partnerships. At the same time, they want to recruit hard-to-find technical and engineering talents. Several top executives from the automotive industry will participate, including Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius, Ford Chief Technology Officer Ken Washington and BMW R&D Director Klaus Frohlich. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao will give a keynote address on the state of innovation and the DOT initiatives to integrate new technologies into U.S. transportation systems.
Here is a summary of what the automakers expect to show at CES
BMW will present an interior concept for the i3 EV. The „BMW i3 Urban Suite“, which is said to have „the relaxed feel of a boutique hotel“, features a large seat with footrest, a screen that folds down from the headliner and a „personal sound zone“.
Fisker will introduce the Ocean all-electric crossover, powered by an 80 kWh lithium-ion battery, with an expected range of up to 300 miles. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2021.
Ford will show its 2021 Mustang Mach-E crossover. The eagerly awaited mass-market EV with a range of 300 miles is Ford’s answer to Tesla, General Motors and others who brought it to the electrical market with long-range EVs.
GM will demonstrate the integration of Amazon’s Alexa Auto voice-controlled virtual assistant into a new Cadillac CT5.
Honda will showcase technologies jointly developed by its Honda Xcelerator and start-ups focused on improving workplace ergonomics and production efficiency. Honda will demonstrate exoskeletal devices and a speech-enabled, AI-powered personal assistant developed with SoundHound. And it will demonstrate its „Smartphone as Brain“ technology, which enables drivers to use their phones safely on the road.
Hyundai will show details of a flying vehicle concept and a „highly adaptable“ prototype vehicle with autonomous driving. The automaker plans to become a „Smart Mobility Solution Provider“ by 2025 and invest more than 50 billion dollars in electric and fuel cell cars, autonomous driving, flying taxis and mobility services.
Mercedes will present a concept car that envisages „a completely new form of interaction between man, technology and nature“ and will show its EQ-EVs. Mercedes expects to introduce a fleet of 10 EVs by 2022, starting with the EQC electric compact crossover, which will be introduced in the US in 2021.
Nissan will present its Ariya electric crossover concept. A production version of the five-seater could arrive in the USA in 2021. U.S. dealers who were informed about the product last summer said the new EV has a range of 300 miles on the battery and will go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 5 seconds.
Renault will demonstrate a technology that allows connected devices in the house to be controlled from the car’s dashboard. The company also plans to show a battery-powered EV with a hydrogen system that will triple the range of a zero-emission vehicle.
