More than 80 million Americans – nearly 1 in 4 people in the United States – are under state or communal quarantine. On Sunday alone, the number of coronavirus cases in the USA rose by over 27,000.

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the first rapid coronavirus test with a result time of about 45 minutes. Producer Cepheid said over the weekend that it has received emergency approval from the FDA and that the test will be used primarily in hospitals and emergency rooms. Cepheid plans to begin shipping the test to hospitals this week.

The FDA has announced that it is researching a treatment derived from the donated blood plasma of patients who have recovered from COVID-19, and a similar version was used in China during the 2002 SARS outbreak, resulting in milder symptoms and shorter hospital stays for some patients. Dr. Arturo Casadevall of Johns Hopkins University pointed out that he is working with doctors from nearly two dozen hospitals on this treatment, including researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Stanford University Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

The number of coronavirus cases in New York State has increased by 3,000 to 10,356. New York City reports 6,211 cases. Governor Andrew Cuomo attributes these numbers to increased testing and says the state does more testing per capita than China or South Korea. Cuomo believes the state is eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance because Friday’s disaster was declared a major disaster.

Hawaiian Prime Minister David Ige has announced that a 14-day self-quarantine will apply to all arrivals in the state starting Thursday. The order will apply to all arrivals at Hawaii’s airports – whether residents or visitors.

A man was arrested for stealing 66 rolls of toilet paper from a Marriott hotel in Orlando. Local police say a security guard saw 31-year-old Angel Hernandezcinto, who was neither a guest nor an employee of the hotel, load the toilet paper into his car.
