The statement by the office of the director of the National Intelligence Agency thus stands against allegations and conspiracy theories put forward by anti-China activists and some supporters of President Donald Trump, which suggested that the new coronavirus was developed by Chinese scientists in a government biological weapons laboratory from which it then escaped.
The intelligence statement thus supports the position of the World Health Organisation (WHO), which already announced on 21 April that all the available evidence suggests that the corona virus was derived from animals from China at the end of last year and was not tampered with or produced in a laboratory.
US officials familiar with intelligence reporting and analysis have been saying for weeks that they do not believe conspiracy theories that Chinese scientists developed the corona virus in a state biological weapons laboratory, from which it then escaped. They believe that it was either naturally introduced into a meat market in Wuhan or could have escaped from one of two Wuhan Government laboratories that are believed to be conducting civilian research into possible biological threats.
Trump, who blamed China for the global pandemic, said last week that he believes China’s handling of the disease is proof that Beijing „will do everything in its power“ to lose its re-election bid in November. Earlier, in an interview with Reuters, Trump had announced that he was looking at various options regarding the impact of the virus on Beijing. „There’s a lot I can do,“ he said, without giving details.
More than 3.20 million people worldwide have been infected with the novel corona virus to date, according to statistics from the Reuters news agency, and 227,864 have died.
