Gartner: Drastic slump in PC shipments

New York, 10/20/2022

Worldwide PC shipments fell dramatically in the third quarter, with sales down between 15% and 19.5% year-over-year, according to various data providers. Gartner, for example, reported that 68 million PCs were shipped in the latest quarter, down from 84.5 million a year earlier and the steepest decline in more than two decades. Gartner reported declines at all major PC manufacturers.

Gartner said supply chain disruptions have now eased, but high inventory levels are a concern given weak demand for PCs from both consumers and businesses.

Canalys and International Data Corp. also reported sharp declines in PC shipments in the third quarter. However, the numbers were mixed, particularly for overall and Apple sales: Canalys reported an 18% decline in sales for the quarter. Apple was the only company with positive year-over-year growth of 1.7%.

IDC reported a 15% decline in worldwide PC shipments. Notably, Apple reported a 40% increase in shipments.

Gartner’s data showed that Apple’s PC sales fell 15.6% year over year. The companies have similar methods for tracking sales, but their calculations are slightly different, the reports said.
