EU and U.S. ahead of deal for greater security in AI technologies

Washington, Nov. 11, 2022

The U.S. and EU will release a joint document that prioritizes security and risk management in artificial intelligence, according to Marisa Lago, U.S. undersecretary of commerce for international trade. Lago called the new AI roadmap “a shared priority” that will continue to grow as new AI applications are released.

The document is scheduled to be released at the Dec. 5 meeting of the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council. According to Lago, the paper can help ensure that AI technologies used are compatible with the shared free-market and democratic values of both countries.

The paper will become more relevant if other more authoritarian governments – and this likely means

likely meaning China and Russia – take different approaches to AI security and risk management,” Lago said.

Meanwhile, a new paper suggests the U.S. will try to water down the EU’s proposed rules for regulating AI, including an attempt to narrow the definition of AI.
