Cybercriminals are promoting a fake giveaway campaign on Twitter

The scammers create a Twitter list that includes people who had recently followed Elon Musk. These users are pretended that Elon Musk is giving away 5000 Bitcoin to 1000 randomly selected followers with the correct answers to a quiz.

Anyone who gets involved in this game receives a link that takes them to a website called „freedomgiveaway [.] net“. It contains a fake quiz about Elon Musk and his companies. Once they answered the questions correctly, they would automatically be among the winners. When the winning notification arrives, the website will display a BTC address to which 0.2-1 BTC should be sent as a deposit fee. After receiving the cryptocurrency, the hackers close the pop-up page and the game is over.

Who is responsible for this campaign has not yet been determined.

Background:

It’s not the first time scammers have used Elon Musk’s image to lure more visitors to malicious websites. In early 2022, videos from an online conversation between Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, and Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood were edited with Voiceoversk to suggest Musk was selling an investment program.

North Korean hackers were responsible for one of the most notorious cryptocurrency cases this year. They managed to steal over $600 million from the token-based game Axie Infinity.
