Chief Ki Officer of the Pentagon has retired

Washington, 4.6.2020

Lieutenant General Jack Shanahan – previously the Pentagon’s top AI official – officially withdrew from the military’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) last weekend.

At an event, Shanahan told viewers that the JAIC had upgraded its AI in order to be able to communicate more quickly during wartime operations. He said the military must move faster to involve AI in warfare and national security.

Shanahan, a member of the Air Force for more than 35 years, is a former leader of the controversial Defense Department’s Maven project, which used Google’s computer vision software to identify people and objects in drone videos.

He stressed that „killer robots“ would be delivered for deployment before the end of this year.

JAIC is currently working on integrating its five ethical principles for AI, which were presented in February.

The Centre recently awarded an $800 million contract to Booz Allen Hamilton, which will provide the military with AI technology and services for warfare.
